Often people use the words BOTOX® and dermal fillers interchangeably. Yes, they are both injectables, but other than that, they are very different. BOTOX and dermal fillers at our Portland practice can be great ways to rejuvenate the face, but patients must understand the differences before choosing to undergo treatment. Being properly informed will help you achieve the best possible results.

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is a natural purified protein that, once injected, temporarily relaxes muscles in the face. These muscles are what cause wrinkles. There is no downtime after getting injections. Many patients return to work immediately after treatment. Having said that, it is normal to experience slight swelling, bruising, or redness following treatment. These side effects should subside quickly.

What are dermal fillers?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that diminishes as we age. This causes our skin to lose elasticity and volume and develop wrinkles. Fortunately, most dermal fillers are made using hyaluronic acid—this makes them safe for most people. Dermal fillers can take years off a patient’s appearance by lifting and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, while adding volume. Like BOTOX, most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment. Slight bruising and swelling can occur, but will resolve within a day.

What areas does BOTOX treat?

BOTOX can be used to treat moderate to severe wrinkles. It can correct crow’s feet, laugh lines, frown lines, lines around the lips, and forehead lines. Individuals with medical conditions involving damaged nerves or muscle issues may not be good candidates. It is important to disclose this information to your provider before treatment. Additionally, we advise patients that are pregnant or breastfeeding to hold off on treatment until they are finished nursing.

What areas do dermal fillers treat?

Fillers can be used to reduce the look of fine lines, wrinkles, and various other signs of aging. Also, they can be beneficial for patients wanting to add structure or volume to the cheeks, brows, and lips. We advise against having treatment while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Generally, most cosmetic treatments like dermal fillers and BOTOX are not suitable for pregnant women.

How long does BOTOX last?

The BOTOX procedure takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and it temporarily reduces wrinkles for about 3 to 6 months. To maintain results, patients must return for follow up visits. Once you begin regular treatments, your body can become accustomed. After several treatments, patients are able to come in less frequently for follow-up appointments.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Our MDBeautyLab offers Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® products, including VOLUMA™ XC, VOLBELLA, and VOLLURE. Each filler has a different lifespan. However, certain fillers can last up to 18 months. After treatment, results will be noticeable immediately.

It is important to be informed when making decisions about injectables. This post is a great place to start when researching your possible options. Your provider will be able to give you more detailed information. He or she will also be able to help you create a treatment plan that fits your specific needs.
