Even though BOTOX® Cosmetic is more popular at our Portland plastic surgery practice than virtually every other cosmetic procedure we offer, misconceptions persist about the treatment. These myths sometimes keep people from pursuing the benefits of BOTOX, even though they believe their appearance makes them look constantly tired, worried, or older than they are.
In this blog post, I’ll outline these common myths and explain why they aren’t true. Additionally, I’ll explain how BOTOX injections combined with dermal fillers can completely refresh your appearance.
Myth 1: BOTOX injections require taking time off work.
Some patients may experience some swelling or redness at the injection sites, but most people return to work or other normal daily activities immediately after their treatments.
Myth 2: Everyone will know you had BOTOX injections.
I think this myth persists because some women and men choose unqualified injectors who produce poor results. When not used appropriately, BOTOX can create a “frozen” look that seems obvious to friends and co-workers. But when injected by a skilled professional, the results look natural.
Myth 3: You’ll enjoy immediate results.
Unlike dermal fillers, which produce results within minutes of injections, the effects of BOTOX injections can take a few days to a week to be seen. This is important to know for patients getting injections with a specific event in mind. Also, BOTOX results typically last 3 to 6 months. We recommend getting touch-up treatments every few months to maintain the results.
Myth 4: BOTOX injections hurt.
Every individual’s pain tolerance is unique, but the majority of patients experience minimal discomfort during BOTOX treatments.
Myth 5: Only women get BOTOX.
True, the majority of BOTOX patients are women. But social media is changing that. Men posting photos on Facebook, online dating sites, or work-related networking apps also want to look youthful and vital. BOTOX injections can make that happen, and more men are opting for this treatment.
Myth 6: The results are permanent.
Not true. As I mentioned earlier, the results of BOTOX injections last a few months, and repeat treatments are needed to maintain the rejuvenated appearance created by BOTOX treatments.
Combining BOTOX and filler injections is a popular treatment plan. If you’re concerned about forehead wrinkles or crow’s feet, which respond well to BOTOX, chances are other areas of the face also show signs of aging. The loss of volume around the mouth and in the cheeks can be corrected with fillers, providing optimal facial rejuvenation.
